I’ve arrived in Nairobi and checked into the Fairmont. I’ve been hit with a bit of guilt in the irony. Here I am traveling to Africa in business class on British Airways and then staying in one of the nicest five star resorts in the city, on route to build a classroom for disadvantaged kids that have practically nothing.
Of course, I don’t actually pay for these luxuries. That would be a stupid waste of thousands of dollars that could have gone to the school. I get them given to me at tremendous discounts (one of the perks of selling luxury travel!), so it’s not a waste-of-money thing.
I guess the guilt comes from being pampered on a trip that is meant to help others. Why should I be treated so well when the villagers in Solio get by with so little?
I keep telling myself I just need to get over it because the alternative is staying in a worse hotel and taking a worse flight – for more money! I suppose that doesn’t make any sense…
Looking forward to a good night sleep and then first thing tomorrow I’m off to drive the 2-3 hours up to the village to meet up with the rest of the team.
There’s no telling what the Internet situation will be like once I get there. We’re staying in a hotel in a nearby town. Hopefully we’ll be able to get something there.
